This is a question that is very much top of mind for many pursuing Vision Therapy, and is met with an unfortunately ambiguous answer – it depends.
Okanagan Vision Therapy Insurance Policy
Following a vision assessment, our Kelowna team at Okanagan Vision Therapy compiles a very detailed report outlining the exact deficits uncovered, the advised treatment protocol and expected outcomes. Vision tends to be a sensory system that is challenging to describe, so we have worked to tweak and hone our reports over the years so that they can connect and resonate with as many readers as possible.
As Optometrists, we tend to speak a language that is very challenging to interpret by those outside of our field, including medical doctors. Condensing our reports into plain English is essential.
Optometrists Vision Reports and Insurance
Once the report is generated, we work closely with families and insurance adjusters to make sure that what we are proposing is understood. Although changing, Vision Therapy is not yet part of the common vernacular and so putting a great deal of time and care into discussing and writing about our services and treatment plans is essential for building trust and understanding.
At present, a full 15% of my weekly schedule is devoted to communicating with adjusters, insurance companies and allied professionals. This is time that I have committed to improving understanding, building relationships and ensuring that the road toward coverage becomes easier for all of us over time.
Okanagan Vision Therapy’s Patients
Given our solid track record here at Okanagan Vision Therapy, the tides for approval and coverage are changing. With more and more successful patients speaking up and sharing their stories, it is only a matter of time before the floodgates for approval open entirely.
Thank you to all those out there who continue to share and speak positively about what we do. You can be certain we will continue to do all we can to educate and advocate for Vision Therapy. We are sincerely grateful to those of you doing the same.
Until next month,
